Director of Payments

Our client is an established iGaming group with a strong international presence, delivering exceptional player experiences across multiple brands and markets. They are seeking a Director of Payments to lead the global payments strategy, enhance operational performance, and drive innovation in payment technologies.

This is a senior executive role responsible for building a market-leading payments ecosystem that supports business growth, regulatory compliance, and customer satisfaction. Acting as the face of the payments product, this person will be the primary point of contact for all PSPs across all markets and brands, with full responsibility for negotiating commercial agreements, signing off on deals, and representing the company at industry events.

The role includes leadership of the payments team and requires an established network of contacts within the sector. While not a technical position, the Director will oversee and prioritise payments-related technical backlogs in collaboration with their team, ensuring the right focus for maximum business impact. The position reports directly to senior leadership and involves close collaboration across multiple departments to deliver best-in-class payment experiences.

Location: Malta, hybrid from the office three days per week
Travel: International travel approximately once every two months, primarily for conferences, partner meetings, and industry events (booked in advance).

Responsibilities:

As Director of Payments, your broad responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

Strategic Leadership & Relationship Management

  • Act as the primary point of contact for all Payment Service Providers (PSPs) and key financial partners across all brands and markets, fostering long-term, high-value relationships.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive payment strategy to support business growth, market expansion, and regulatory requirements.
  • Lead high-level negotiations to secure optimal commercial terms, pricing, and service levels, with full mandate to sign off on agreements.
  • Leverage an existing professional network to strengthen partnerships and open new opportunities.
  • Identify emerging trends, customer needs, and market opportunities to drive payment innovation and maintain competitiveness.
  • Represent the company in industry forums, regulatory discussions, and senior-level partner meetings.

Development & Innovation of Payment Solutions

  • Define and champion the payments product vision, ensuring alignment with business goals and customer expectations.
  • Oversee the design, delivery, and continuous improvement of innovative, scalable, and secure payment products and services.
  • Monitor the competitive landscape and regulatory environment to adapt strategies proactively.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with internal teams to deliver best-in-class payment experiences.
  • Work closely with technical teams to prioritise and manage payments-related backlogs, ensuring focus on the most impactful developments.

Operational Excellence & Onboarding

  • Oversee the onboarding of new payment providers, ensuring alignment with legal, compliance, and finance teams, as well as corporate governance standards.
  • Maintain operational efficiency and resilience across payment processes, including settlement flows, reconciliation, and issue resolution.
  • Drive automation, process improvement, and system enhancements in collaboration with Technology and Finance teams.

Reporting & Performance Management

  • Establish and oversee robust reporting frameworks to monitor PSP performance, payment KPIs, and commercial outcomes.
  • Present strategic insights and recommendations to leadership, leveraging data to drive informed decisions.
  • Ensure transparency and alignment through regular reporting on key initiatives, performance metrics, and market trends.

Team Leadership

  • Build, mentor, and lead a high-performing payment solutions team.
  • Set clear objectives, provide coaching, and conduct regular performance reviews to foster professional growth and accountability.
  • Promote a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement within the team.
Requirements:
  • 10+ years of experience in payment solutions within the iGaming industry (either from operator or PSP), with at least 5 years in a leadership position.
  • Proven track record in developing and executing global payment strategies.
  • Extensive network of contacts within the payments and iGaming sectors.
  • Strong negotiation skills and experience managing relationships with PSPs and financial partners.
  • Excellent understanding of compliance and regulatory requirements in multiple jurisdictions.
  • Ability to oversee and prioritise payments-related technical backlogs while working with product and technology teams.
  • Exceptional communication skills, with fluency in written and spoken English.
