Our client, an iGaming B2B provider, is seeking an experienced Lead Backend Developer to drive technical excellence in their backend systems. The successful candidate will combine strong hands-on development skills with a passion for system design and architectural problem-solving. The role emphasizes coding, architecture, and technical leadership — ensuring scalable, high-performance solutions that support the company's growing product ecosystem.

This position is based in Malta, on-site, with elements of flexibility, on a 37.5 hours per week working hours instead of 40 hours.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership & Hands-On Development

  • Deliver clean, maintainable, and scalable code, setting a benchmark for technical quality.
  • Actively contribute to design discussions, code reviews, and problem-solving.
  • Define and evolve backend architecture to ensure scalability, maintainability, and resilience.
  • Establish and advocate for coding standards, testing practices, and best workflows.

System Architecture & Reliability

  • Drive architectural decisions that impact long-term scalability and system health.
  • Collaborate with QA on non-functional aspects such as performance testing, security, and reliability.
  • Champion performance tuning, incident management, and system observability (monitoring, logging, alerting).

Project & Delivery Contribution

  • Work with Product Managers and stakeholders to translate business needs into robust technical solutions.
  • Take ownership of critical backend components and ensure timely, high-quality delivery.
  • Support continuous improvement in development practices and deployment pipelines.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner closely with frontend, QA, DevOps, and design teams to deliver seamless, end-to-end solutions.
  • Communicate technical risks, trade-offs, and recommendations to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Experience and Skills
  • Proven experience as a Senior Backend Engineer, Lead Developer, or Principal Engineer.
  • 5–7 years of relevant working experience with Java and Spring.
  • Strong knowledge of PostgreSQL (PSQL), Redis, and RabbitMQ.
  • Hands-on experience with ElasticSearch and Docker.
  • BS/MS degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related subject.
  • Solid understanding of Object-Oriented Design and Patterns.
  • Experience with test-driven development and modern CI/CD workflows.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, challenging environment and manage multiple priorities.
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
  • Strong written and spoken English.
  • Experience working with Elasticsearch is ideal.
  • Experience working in iGaming is a plus
